The Spec
Salt air eats beach hardware, so the spec starts there. Wet-rated locks. The whole unit stands on about 24 square feet of sand, two beach towels of footprint. Everything else below, from the coatings to the service schedule, was chosen for a machine that has to sit in the weather for years and still open on the first tap.
Salt-, UV- and mildew-resistant coatings over marine-grade steel. Contents stay dry and out of the heat.
The app handles booking and payment, and it opens the door. PIN and card access are wired in for the phone that died in the sun.

The Story
BeachBox comes from Giuseppe Valentino Pata, a fourth-year at Chapman University. He grew up in Petaluma, Northern California, not a beach town. The rest of it, he should tell you himself:
My pops, Raffaello Pata, spent 41 years in law enforcement and retired as chief of police in the Town of Ross, and he was an FBI-trained sketch artist the entire way through. My grandfather served in the Italian Carabinieri and my uncle was a dispatcher. Safety and art in one object isn’t a marketing idea for me, it’s the only family business I’ve known, and building this feels like the way I get to honor them while doing something real for the beaches and community we all love.

That's what BeachBox is: art and security in one box.
The idea arrived at Chapman, where he moved in with surfers and kept watching friends walk out of the water to find their stuff gone. Some of them quietly stopped going to certain beaches. That's not a gear problem. That's people losing the beach.
The homework so far: 100+ customer interviews, 75 of them face-to-face on Southern California sand, the permitting path mapped agency by agency, the enclosure engineered against salt air. Lockers have been tried on these beaches before and haven't stuck. He's still working out why, and building the one that will.
He's two years into Chapman's Entrepreneur Center incubator, where he took BOA, an emergency tourniquet, from concept to prototype to an investor pitch. He spent fall 2025 at Korea University carrying a six-class maximum load and building BeachBox the whole time.

FAQ
Small is $3 an hour, medium is $5, and large is $8. Billing is by the hour, and the meter only runs while you're renting. No membership, no minimums. Phone charging is free.
Doors run from a slot sized for a phone and wallet up to tall lockers that swallow a full beach bag and towels.
Two answers: your locker also opens with a PIN or card, and your locker charges your phone free while it's stored.
The spec is tamper-resistant steel with 24/7 camera monitoring. No locker anywhere is theft-proof and we won't pretend ours is. The goal is to be the hardest target on the beach. Storage is at your own risk, same as every locker you've ever used.
No. Nobody can give us money today. Reservations open once the first unit is ready for the sand. When they do, founding-member spots will be held with a fully refundable deposit, and this list gets the first call. The checkbox on the signup form just tells us you want one; it costs nothing.
Southern California first. We're not naming beaches or dates until the agreements behind them are signed. You'll hear the moment it's real.
